Plein Air with Bob McMurray

Painting on location is an important part of the process of learning to observe relationships that are fundamental in drawing and painting. A certain creative energy is captured in the personal struggle to interpret the rapidly changing light conditions, colour, texture and rhythms experienced in the moment. Often the paintings express a unique energy that is difficult to repeat in the studio environment.

Two locations will be selected (e.g. seascape and townscape) for plein air painting. Bob will demonstrate in oils (day 1) and acrylic (day 2) and explain how to focus on the process and practicalities of plein air painting, with morning demos and lots of one-on-one time with each student with their preferred medium. Includes a preliminary handout on preparing to paint outdoors.

The objective will be to complete a few paintings over the weekend. Note: if the weather is bad we will paint t Lions Hall from reference material (Bob will bring lots or use yours) pretending we are outside!

Where: BEAUTIFUL SALT SPRING ISLAND

When: October 2 & 3, 2010

Cost: $145

Registration: Contact Don Hodgins (email) or phone 250 537-5406

Organized by the Salt Spring Island Painters'Guild (www.ssipaintersguild.com)

Who Is Bob McMurray (http://artists.ca/rmcmurray)

Bob was born in New Westminster and grew up in Richmond. He had a professional career as a chartered accountant, while maintaining his interest in painting through involvement in FCA workshops since the mid-80s and the Foundation Courses in the 90s. His work is representational in style and leans towards nostalgia.

While he works in many media he favours oils, acrylics and watercolour, and is an enthusiastic plein air painter. He has also taught many workshops and demonstrated painting in a variety of media, stressing colour harmonies and light patterns. Bob's paintings are in a number of private and corporate collections in Canada and abroad. He was elected to Associate Signature status (AFCA) by the Federation of Canadian Artists in 1995, and made an Honorary Life Member in 2007.

Materials list:

A fairly extensive materials list will be supplied to those who register for the workshop. But rest assured, it’s not complicated, pretty much the usual painting supplies.
