Nestled on Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy, with the world’s highest tides creating unique and ever-changing shoreline scenery, Parrsboro has become home to Canada’s largest Plein Air Festival.

Date: June 22-26, 2022

Location: Parrsboro, Nova Scotia (map)

Cost: Application fee $40 :: Artist applications due March 11, 2022

More Information:

Since 2017, Parrsboro Creative has organized the Parrsboro International Plein Air Festival, drawing 30 juried artists annually from across North America to compete in painting the picturesque sea and landscapes the Parrsboro Shore has to offer.

It’s part of Parrsboro Creative’s vision of developing the area’s cultural economy through the creation and enhancement of a community or artists and artisans that will rejuvenate the community, once a thriving shipbuilding area. Of course, the festival would not be possible without the support of sponsors ranging from government to private enterprise. Its success has been chronicled in media across North America, reaching thousands of artists, art galleries and art collectors’ organizations across the continent.

After a shift in 2020 to an online-only event, and Atlantic-only in 2021 due to COVID-19, PIPAF will be accepting applications once again from across North America!

Plein Air Painting Festival at the Kilby Historic Site

Join us for the 5th annual Plein Air Painting festival at the Kilby Historic Site in Harrison Mills. This “In the Open Air” painting festival was a great success last year, so be sure to mark your calendars!

Date: Aug. 16, 17, & 18th, 2019

Time: 11am to 3pm

Location: Kilby Historic Site, 215 Kilby Rd, Harrison Mills, BC V0M 1L0 (map)

Cost: $20

More Information:

Come and see the competitors as their paintings develop on Friday and Saturday! Then all completed paintings will be displayed for the public on Sunday. Book your reservation for the festival luncheon where the winners will be announced.

For those who are new to the event, it celebrates artwork created “en plein air,” meaning literally “in the open air.” This style of painting originated in Europe near the end of the 19th century, when artists left their studios to paint what they saw in the great outdoors! Devotees believe that painting on site, in natural light, produces luminous paintings of unparalleled quality and beauty.

During the competition, come rain or shine, up to fifty participating artists from across the Lower mainland will be painting around the Historic Site. Artists will capture breathtaking historic vistas, 1920s farm equipment, historic buildings, lush gardens & orchards, delightful farm animals, and surrounding mountains of our uniquely beautiful region.

The festival will culminate on Sunday with live entertainment and an award ceremony after the 2 pm Sunday luncheon. The sale of paintings will occur throughout the afternoon on Sunday until 3 pm.
