Scholarship to Plein Air Workshop in Rocky Mountains

Instructor: Jerry Markham
Date: July 19-22, 2013
Location: Okanagan Valley

I am excited to offer a scholarship program where one spot in my plein air workshop in the Rocky Mountains is provided free for someone between the ages of 17 and 25, from Canada or the USA, who is currently enrolled in an art program and interested in pursuing art as a career. We also provide $500 towards accommodations and some art supplies.

I have a passion for painting the landscape as well as helping artists that are just getting started. I had a difficult time finding the training I was looking for when I got started in this career, and I believe that painting the landscape from life is the best way to become a better landscape painter. For those reasons I am offering this scholarship.

This is a unique opportunity to paint in the Canadian Rockies where Carl Rungius, John Singer Sargent, the Group of Seven, and other masters have painted. In the workshop I will teach the fundamentals of landscape painting in some of the most beautiful places in the Rocky Mountains, including Moraine Lake, Bow Lake and Lake O’Hara. My hope is that this experience will help educate people in not only how to paint the landscape, but also the importance of painting from life and experiencing nature first hand in art, and learning about the artists that have come before us. I also hope to inspire others to continue to paint, enjoy art and move forward in their artistic endeavours.

Entry deadline for scholarship: April 15, 2013

Rocky Mountains with Jerry Markham

Instructor: Jerry Markham
Date: July 19-22, 2013 & July 22-25, 2013
Location: Okanagan Valley
Cost: $600 + tax

In this workshop we will follow in the footsteps of master painters, such as John Singer Sargent, Carl Rungius and J.E.H. MacDonald, through their travels of the Canadian Rockies, painting at Bow Lake, Lake O’Hara and Moraine Lake.

At Bow Lake we will paint in the same places as Carl Rungius, to study what he saw and why it is important to study the masters to better understand our own work. At Lake O’Hara we will stand at Sargent’s Point and paint one of the most beautiful, and most painted, places on earth. Painters from around the world have come to paint and study these wonders of mother nature. We will study the works of some of these artists and then learn to create our own interpretation of these majestic places.

You will receive a lot of helpful info and tips on landscape painting, plein air painting, and how to paint mountains, as well as on painting techniques such as creating compelling compositions, working with values, edges, color, and more.

Length: 3 days + evening presentation and meet & greet
