Info:
The Grand Prix d'Art, hosted by "The Old School House Arts Centre", will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2011. Grand Prix d'Art is a "race"; competing artists must complete a work of art “en plein air” in the space of three hours. This year each artist will be assigned a zone in the picturesque town of Qualicum Beach by lottery. Prior to the event, local businesses are approached to sponsor an artist. Those sponsoring businesses will be in the designated zones from which the artist must work. The work must represent or be inspired by some thing or person that is visible from the assigned location. Most locations are within walking distance of The Old School House. The finished work must be in presentation condition, titled and priced for sale no later than one hour after completion. A panel of three judges then determines the winners of the contest. $20.00 entry fee includes an Artist Meal at the end of the event will be provided; companion meals may be purchased for $10.00. Prizes to be announced.

There seems to be Plein Air magazine making it's debut (well, officially a comeback) in 2011. The magazine promises to be exclusively about plein air painting.
From their site:
PleinAir ™ Magazine was originally published in 2004 and later became Fine Art Connoisseur magazine because of a need at the time for broader, differently focused content. The company, however always loved the title and intended to bring it back once it saw evidence that a stronger “plein air” market could support this specialty title. Following strong demand from the plein air community of collectors and painters asking for it’s return, an in-depth study was conducted in 2008 to determine if the time was right and what, if anything should change in the area of content. An overwhelming response from readers indicated that the time was right and that the rapidly-growing plein air movement could now support the publication.
Starting in February 2011 we will once again publish PleinAir ™ as a quarterly (4 times) publication. We are also offering digital subscriptions.
I have already subscribed to the digital version and will post a review when I get the first issue in February 2011. If you are further interested, you can find the magazine site at: PleinAirMagazine.com

There hasn't been much activity around here lately due to the colder weather and the fact that I am swamped between family life and my company work.
Merry Christmas everyone. Enjoy the holidays and lets try to get together more in 2011.
Cheers,
Michael

Thanks to the efforts of Janice Robertson, Alfonso Tejada and the organizers of the Apple Festival there were approximately 20 artists painting around the grounds at Derby Reach (map) during the Apple Festival in Langley.
The area, frequented by locals for walking, running and cycling, offers some great compositions for the artist. Take the trail to the waters edge or to a lovely area with rolling hills and horses.
There are plans for getting together next year and it will be post it when the time comes.

I have been thinking of logo for Plein Air BC awhile now and have settled on the above. A stylized tree on the left with a formal, but variable, text style on the right.

It is September already! I don't know about you, but July and August were so busy that the time just flew buy.
Now that the weather has cooled off and the kids are back in school I can get back into my regular groove. I will be trying to make it out every weekend to paint and I hope some people in my part of the woods can make it also.
Recently I have been exploring the Pitt River dyke area which turns out to have some nice vistas to paint. I am looking forward to the fall so there is not so much green. :)

Even with the rain, the 3rd annual Grand Prix of Plein Air Challenge hosted by Alfonso Tejada at the 2010 Harmony Festival was a success. Twenty three (23) artists came out to paint and to get to know each other.
Four awards were given out at the end of the three hour painting competition. First Place: Louise Nicholson; Second Place: Violet Taylor; Third Place: Kathryn Wright; Honourable Mention: John Hofman.
Congratulations to everyone that came out that day and endured the rain.
