Description:

This workshop for artists who want to develop an understanding of the fundamentals of outdoor (plein aire) painting through demonstrations (in pastel or oil), lectures, practices, and critique.  The workshop will focus the artist on effectively capturing light, atmosphere, and mood in outdoor environments while developing strong compositions and color harmony. Learning to observe and present the concept on paper or canvas is the focus of any painter.  Discover the answer in this three day workshop as you learn to “see” the subject, interpret visual elements and execute it on paper or canvas.

Weekend workshop  for PLEIN AIR basics. Step up to the challenge of painting on location – direct from nature.

Participants will learn the essentials for painting outdoors: equipment, materials, limited color palette (supply list provided) simple exercises and tips for subject choice, composition & value study.

Novice and experienced painters who work in Acrylics, Watercolor or Pastel (no oils).

For a fraction of the cost to paint with an instructor oversees, you can enjoy painting local landscapes on a beautiful retreat just outside of Fort Langley with this Vancouver artist workshop!

lunches provided (full retreat only)

The focus will be on plein air painting. If the weather doesn’t permit plein air painting we have access to a spacious indoor painting space.

As artists we all want to think outside the box, which is good, however, if you don’t understand what’s in the box itself then it’s hard to be outside of it. In this three-day workshop we will work through the importance of a dynamic composition, strong value scheme, driving depth with aerial perspective, the use of edges and forceful colour. Capitalizing on these ideas we will then take a look at how to utilize them to free our creativity and compose compelling paintings.
